Our next business is proof-positive that diversification can be an incredible boon for the right business. Starting out as an event hire company in 2011, Sweet Expectations pivoted in 2016 and purchased a sweet shop in Rochester, quickly followed by a second in Faversham in 2017. They now have plans to open a third shop in the near future as business continues to flourish.
What sets Sweet Expectations apart from competitors is the fact that they were the first Vegetarian Sweet Shop to open in the UK. Manager Jamie Breach discussed their positioning: “Obviously it is wonderful that we can honestly say that we were the first vegetarian sweet shop in the UK. When we opened our Faversham shop we continued this trend but with a few changes. We believe the future of our business is catering for all dietary requirements; whether it’s gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free or Vegan.”
The shop offers a variety of different types of sweets – from liquorice to lollipops, fizzy sweets to fudge. They also have plenty of retro and novelty sweets, such as flying saucers and Pez dispensers and are able to provide customers with gift boxes and luxury hampers.
Jamie is keen for his business to be recognised at the 2018 Swale Business Awards due to contribution it makes to the local community. He said: “We believe in providing excellent customer service as well as helping local charitable organisations within our area. One of the main reasons we chose Faversham to open our second shop, was the fact that they had lost their local and much loved sweet shop in February 2017 and we wanted to be able to offer this service to the community.”
