Now in her twentieth year of trading, Sylvia Lawrence’s thriving business Country Brides continues to go from strength-to-strength. The Faversham business, provides bridal wear to customers from local areas and London, with some people travelling from other parts of the country and all over the world to visit the store – including Paris, Amsterdam and even Australia.
Giving brides and bridal parties the best possible experience is paramount to Sylvia and her team. The previous year threw some expected challenges her way when her largest supplier unexpectedly ceased trading with no notice. “It was a difficult time because we had almost sixty dresses on order with the company,” Sylvia elaborated. “When we realised that we would not be getting these dresses we did everything in our power to make sure our customers were not adversely affected. We travelled the country searching for the supplier’s existing stock and for those we couldn’t find we offered the brides significant discounts on alternative dresses. The most important thing to us was to make sure that our brides still had the perfect wedding day that they had dreamed of.”
After weathering that storm, there are still plenty of other challenges to face. With competitors going bust left and right, Country Brides has managed to compete both on price and on quality. It is this reputation that attracts visitors from across the globe. It is also Sylvia’s incredible knowledge of the industry that keep the business flourishing, regardless of the challenges thrown her way.
“We have now been in Faversham for more than 20 years, with 10 years of current ownership ensuring longevity and sustainability by moving with the times,” Sylvia explained. “Our customer service is second to none. We believe that to remain one of the leading bridal stores in Kent following the demise of the biggest wedding dress wholesaler in the world with whom we did 90% of our business means that we have a place in the Borough as one of the companies who deserve to be recognised at the 2018 Swale Business Awards.”
