Returning to the Swale Business Awards in 2017 is AbBaltis, the Kent Science Park-based business that last entered in 2013, when they were named Small Business of the Year. Over the last four years, AbBaltis has gone from strength-to-strength. They continue to provide disease state plasma and serum to the biologics and diagnostic markets, helping companies to develop new and improve existing blood diagnostic tests.
Since they last entered the Swale Business Awards, the turnover of the business has increased by 97% and they now employ eight members of staff. They also have customers across the world, including the USA, the EU, China, South Korea and Japan.
Managing Director Giedre Brandao discussed how the business had progressed over the last four years: “We are very much scientifically driven and our products come with a lot of scientific data, which makes us stand out from our competitors. The business decisions we make are driven by strong scientific rationale allowing us to direct money to the projects that are proving to be technically sound and viable. This approach is certainly attracting customers and we have experienced year-on-year growth much higher than the industry average.”
Giedre explained why she felt that AbBaltis deserved to be recognised at the Swale Business Awards again in 2017: “ I believe we deserve to win as AbBaltis is a very resilient business and is able to navigate the changes and uncertainties in the market, and reinvent itself to serve the customers by scanning the horizon and quickly adapting to the changes. Since the start of the business in 2010 AbBaltis has been able to grow and expand without external finance and remains debt free and profitable. We also contribute to the community by hosting a comparatively large number of work experience students. This summer alone we are planning on hosting six students from local schools and universities.”
