Established in 2011, Queenborough Harbour Trust provides offshore and quayside mooring for rental by both commercial and leisure mariners. The Sheppey company has a diverse customer base including leisure boaters, commercial fishermen and visitors from across the UK, throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
As the business is a “not for profit” Community Interest Company, one key to success is having a committed team of directors, staff and volunteers that are dedicated to making sure the company thrives. John Finnis, Director of Finance, discussed this: “It is through the continued support of our very competent staff, volunteers and the local community that we have been able to maintain our growth momentum. We involve all our staff in all aspects of the business – there are no secrets from them and in return we enjoy their wholehearted support. They are all local residents and are aware that the efforts we are making benefits both the residents of Swale and the local business community.”
The company is currently enjoying a large degree of success, with 95% take-up of available moorings. This, in part, has been due to the completion of the All Tide Landing (ATL) and the refurbishment of the access walkway. They have also drastically increased the number of visitors, seeing an increase of 56% from 2014 to 2015. The increasing visitor numbers have a direct effect on the local economy as they come ashore and spend in pubs and shops.
John spoke about why he would like to see Queenborough Harbour Trust recognised at the Swale Business Awards: “We deserve to win a Swale Business Award because to date the Company has demonstrated that it has the enthusiasm, drive and experience to develop into a successful viable, vibrant community asset. Winning an award would also be a great way to acknowledge the tenacity, enthusiasm and commitment of our entire team.”
